THE ARTISTS

Emma Stebbins

Emma Stebbins (1 September 1815 - 25 October 1882) was an American sculptor and the first woman to receive a public art commission from New York City. She was best known for her work Angel of the Waters (1873), also known as Bethesda Fountain, located on the Bethesda Terrace in Central Park, New York.

David “George" Garfin

David (“George") Garfin , was born in Odessa Russia, (now a part of Ukraine) on 10/12/1903. At age 16 he traveled with his family to the United States arriving at  Ellis Island. Originally David Garfinkel, like so many immigrants, his name was abbreviated. Now Garfin, the family settled in the Bronx, New York where his father opened a candy store. It was there that Garfin met his wife Miriam Weiner and the two married and had two children, Alvin a successful publisher with Newsweek Magazine  and Howard a well known musician.

A devoted family man, Garfin supported the family as a letter carrier with the US Postal Service while pursuing his passion for art and painting. While he did not travel outside the country after his arrival in the US, his keen eye and romantic nature allowed him to depict  scenes from all over the world from merely a photograph and his imagination. Garfin’s brother Ben Garfinfinkle was also a prolific artist, whose depictions of Rembrandt can easily  be mistaken for the original. David Garfin died on April 4, 1984 in Queens, New York, survived by his loving wife and family.
